Comprehensive Guide to the Trailer Industry: Core Knowledge, Categories and Development Trends

info-1702-1276

In the highway logistics and transportation system, trailers are indispensable core equipment, reputed as the "King of Freight Carriers". According to the national standard GB/T3730.1-2001, a trailer refers to a road vehicle without independent power units, which relies on a tractor for traction to carry goods and equipment. With a maximum design gross mass exceeding 750kg, it can bear loads independently or semi-independently. As a core carrier for long-haul logistics, engineering infrastructure and special transportation, trailers directly determine the capacity, efficiency and cost of highway freight, serving as a vital cornerstone of the modern transportation industry.

Classified by core structure and connection modes, mainstream trailers in the industry fall into three major categories adapted to different transportation scenarios. The semi-trailer ranks first in market share. It is rigidly connected to the tractor saddle via a kingpin, with part of the load borne by the tractor. Featuring high stability and excellent load-bearing capacity, it is mainly applied to long-distance trunk logistics. Common types including box trailers, flatbed trailers, stake trailers and container skeleton trailers all belong to the semi-trailer category. As the mainstream freight model in China, six-axle semi-trailers have a legal load limit of 55 tons, suitable for mainstream transportation demands for general cargo, building materials, containers and more.

Next is the full trailer, which is equipped with a complete set of wheels to bear all cargo loads independently. It is flexibly connected to the truck head through a drawbar and can be stably parked without support legs. Boasting flexible steering and simple operation, it has poor high-speed stability, so it is mostly used for short-distance shuttle transportation in factories, docks, mining areas and other on-site scenarios, with rare application in long-distance trunk transportation. The last type is the center-axle trailer, whose axles are arranged at the center of the cargo box. With a low center of gravity and good trafficability, it balances flexibility and stability, and is mainly used for urban distribution logistics, cold chain transportation and bulk cargo transportation for special lines.

Classified by functional purposes, trailers feature highly diversified categories to precisely meet the demands of segmented tracks. Flatbed trailers are dedicated to the transportation of large goods, steel materials and building materials; box trailers with superior tightness are suitable for general cargo, express delivery and daily necessities; tank trailers are specially designed for transporting oil, chemical fluids, powder and other special goods; dump trailers are widely used for engineering bulk cargo such as sand, gravel, earthwork and ore; heavy-duty special trailers can carry large-scale equipment and bridge components weighing over a hundred tons, which require special traffic permits. The highly customized characteristics enable trailers to cover full-scenario transportation needs in logistics, infrastructure, energy, chemical and other industries.

The trailer industry has three core characteristics: strong rigid demand, high adaptability and strict compliance requirements. First, highway freight transportation mainly relies on tractor-trailer combinations to cut costs and improve efficiency. A single trailer unit can greatly increase cargo capacity and reduce the transportation cost per unit of goods. Second, the industry iterates with market demands, transforming from traditional heavy-load models to lightweight, standardized and specialized ones. Third, the industry is subject to strict compliance supervision, with clear national standards restricting the number of axles, load capacity and dimensions. The normalized supervision on overloading and over-limit transportation has eliminated outdated non-standard vehicles from the market.

Currently, China's trailer industry has entered a high-quality development stage, shifting from pure pursuit of load capacity to lightweight, intelligent and green upgrading. The application of new materials greatly reduces the self-weight of trailers, effectively increasing cargo volume and fuel economy. Intelligent configurations including monitoring systems, tire pressure monitoring and anti-rollover devices have been gradually popularized, significantly improving transportation safety. Meanwhile, the booming development of cold chain logistics, heavy cargo transportation and cross-border logistics has driven rising market demand for specialized and customized trailers.

In general, the trailer industry is a core supporting sector of highway logistics, and its development is deeply linked to the logistics economy and infrastructure construction. Driven by compliant policies and empowered by smart logistics, lightweight design, intellectualization, specialization and new energy adaptation will become the mainstream trends of the industry, continuously promoting quality and efficiency improvement in the modern transportation industry.
