Difference Between Semi-trailer And Full Trailer

Semi trailers and full trailers are two common types of trailers, which have significant differences in structure, towing methods, cargo capacity, and driving stability. The following are the main differences between the two:

1. Structural design
Full trailer: The full trailer has a complete frame and body, which can independently support and maintain stability. Its load is completely borne by itself, connected to the tractor only through hooks, and the tractor only provides power and steering control. ‌

Semi trailer: The front half of the semi-trailer is placed on the towing saddle of the tractor, and the rear axle of the tractor bears part of the weight. A semi-trailer cannot be independently supported and needs to rely on its legs to maintain stability. ‌

2. Traction method
Full trailer: Connected to the tractor through a tow hook or tow bar, the tractor only provides power and steering, and the trailer follows the tractor. ‌

Semi trailer: Connected to the saddle of the tractor through the towing pin, the tractor not only provides power but also bears some weight, making the connection tighter. ‌

3. Cargo carrying capacity
Full trailer: Suitable for transporting goods with large volume and light weight, such as building materials and agricultural products, with a load capacity of tens or even hundreds of tons.
Semi trailer: More suitable for transporting large and heavy goods, such as machinery and containers, with a rated load capacity typically between 30 tons and 50 tons. ‌

4. Driving stability
Full trailer: It is prone to drifting and swaying when driving at high speeds or turning, requiring high driving skills and road conditions.
Semi trailer: Closely connected to the tractor, with a lower center of gravity and good driving stability, suitable for long-distance and high-grade highway transportation.

5. Usage scenarios
Full trailer: Mainly used for transportation in ports, factories, and other areas. Due to poor stability during high-speed driving, it has been restricted from use on highways.
Semi trailer: Widely used in long-distance and high-grade road transportation, it is the main tool in road transportation.

6. Reverse operation
Full trailer: The reversing operation is complex and requires high technical skills from the driver. ‌

Semi trailer: Reversing is relatively simple and easier to handle. ‌

Summarize
Full trailers are suitable for short distance and on-site transportation, while semi trailers are more suitable for long-distance and high-grade highway transportation. The choice of trailer depends on specific transportation needs and driving experience.
